We do believe that the social problem of drug and alcohol addiction is at least a huge component. If we want to quantify 50% minimum of the causality and maintenance of this problem in our society, this is what we’re going to do. We want to contrast this and see what you think about it in terms of an individual problem.
Could it be that addiction has really not much to do with society and is not really maintained by society, and it’s just an individual issue? Could it be true, that all we need to do is just pay attention to how to help an individual?
Once we figure out that formula and presented to the individual who is an addict, then we have figured out the Holy Grail and multiply it formula by billions or millions and save all the addicts, the answer is no.
There is no solution to the social problem of drug addiction
Therefore, there is no solution formula that works for one individual, there are no internally intrinsically individually. Every person is different. It’s not just an individual contributor, but also societal contributor meaning. What does it mean?
It means that a lot of the problems that a person is dealing with are part and parcel of a greater network of that individual. This person is interacting with so meaning outside of the control because if we want to come up with a formula, we are presuming that on the control lies in the individual.
If we came up with a formula and gave it to that individual who is addicted and says:
«You have all the control. This is a formula, go fix it»
That would make sense and work a lot of times. There are certain things like that are completely under the control of a person. And we figure out the formula we give it to them. They fix it, but when it comes to addiction.
Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong!
If you really know about addiction and you have done research and studies, you will see that there are many components that cause addiction and keep people away. Actually paralyze them from receiving, seeking, or maintaining the help and they do have to do with the society they do: the first little society we grow up with is the family and then is a bigger family.
The kind of extended family outside of that is the peers, the school environment, friends, network, and co-workers. The more exposure we have to the greater society, the more influential the society becomes. People don’t live in isolation from society. The society influence on them.
Everywhere you go, every promotion, every invitation from companies and groups aligned with very happy forming concepts. For instance, you want to go to the gym, because healthy activities are focused on habit-forming, repetitive actions, and behaviors.
Self-pleasuring addiction effects
You want to look at this cellular technology every six months and the new phone comes out every year. There are new offers and specials that come out. Our inbox gets inundated with hundreds of emails from all kinds of companies who have all kinds of specials every single week! They’re coming up with newer stuff and they’re kind of domestic in domesticating us to that idea of habits!
Forming, seeking, establishing, following those habits, and also the idea of pleasure self. Pleasuring ourselves, pleasing ourselves and others, good seeking comfort, just simply enjoying life without the discrimination.
If you ask somebody who is addicted to online gaming, gambling, taking prescription or other drugs or engaging in all kinds of repetitive indiscriminate sexual activity, they will tell you:
«I’m just enjoying myself, what’s wrong with that? I’m ten hours a day working on my laptop and doing this game or that game! What’s wrong with that? I’m enjoying myself! Tell me what’s wrong with it!»
It’s hard to argue to tell them, that they shouldn’t be doing that. It’s very hard because we are fighting against the societal concepts and exercises surely accepted phenomenon. It is okay to be repetitively, doing whatever for your pleasure, and the society doesn’t do anything about it.
The social model of an addiction problem
Like millions of organizations, in fact, politics ordinances. Protocols, rules, regulations, we are inundated in our society with all these again habit-forming, self-pleasuring vision that it is good to just focus on that. There’s nothing wrong with it.
We don’t need to even discriminate between good and bad. Who knows that line is blurry like beauties and ID of the beholder. Basically, it’s up to the individual to make that decision. But what we know is what I just said: making the decision, that’s the core concept of addiction and faulty decision is the actual disease.
Is addiction a disease or a choice?
First of all when we talk about addiction, it’s a disease of decision-making. How can we rely on an individual who is addicted? Who is as faulty decision-making to make the right decisions? It’s impossible. It’s an oxymoron that doesn’t work.
How can it be an individual solution? If this addiction problem that everybody is dealing with and just kind of overwhelmed by it and paralyzed by it literally is a societal problem? And indeed we can’t just rely on individuals who are making bad decisions, part of their addiction and disease, to miraculously make the right decisions and snap out of it. Despite what’s going on around them, we can’t do that literally.
Why addiction problem can be difficult to overcome?
What I would like to invite you, is to start thinking differently about addiction. Addiction is a social problem and we really need to work on our society to be able to help addicts and eradicate this problem by changing, discourse, culture, protocols, or norms our customs.
I think we need to promote focus less on this. A masochistic type of an approach that we should do the complete opposite and think about living in misery or not having fun. No, but really focusing on more of a peaceful, a type of content, an approach toward life, like the old saying, goes the yin and yang of life. It is life. At times we have to struggle, to have joy, we have to be. You have to take it richer approach, more holistic, more inclusive of both realities, and once we do that, we created a little bit of a balance in our mind.
Do we really need:
- an iPhone every six months?
- the next car that is coming out?
- to focus on these next self-pleasuring type of principles?
Or can we work a little bit on just being content with what we have?
Just appreciating and really kind of digging deeper into the benefits of what we currently have, rather than seeking the next high. If you will, the whole of society is focusing on seeking the next high! And then we go ahead and blame the addict, for being dysfunctional on their own. Irrespective of what’s going on in the society that doesn’t work.
The statistics of a drug overdose of substance and abuse
And that’s kind of that type of a mindset is going to make the problem with addiction even worse down the road. Currently, almost like seventy thousand people a year are dying due to overdose of substance and abuse.
We don’t have the numbers that really were addicted to gambling, sex addiction, online gaming, and other types of addictions. But millions of people are kind of entangled in these two kinds of dysfunctional. Habitual self-harming tasks and activities that are engaging in on a daily basis. Probably we deserve better when they serve to kind of snap out of it find a way out of it.
The way we do it is by starting to see the systemic nature of addiction. And once we do that, we can chip away at this issue and problem. Probably we start working at eradicating this in human society.
